Highlights
- Choose technology around target platforms, device integrations and the team's maintenance capacity.
- Prototype wearable access, offline workout records and video before estimating the complete build.
- Shared code still requires platform-specific testing, permissions and release work.
There is no single best framework for every fitness app. A booking-led studio product, a workout logger and a watch-connected training app have different demands. Begin with the required member journeys, supported devices and integration limits, then compare how each technology handles them.
Write the platform and integration requirements first
List Android, iOS and web responsibilities separately, including member screens and administration. Identify video playback, notifications, offline records, background synchronization and any wearable or health-data access. Confirm provider permissions and plugin support for each target platform before choosing a shared implementation.
React Native
React Native is a framework for building applications with React and native platform capabilities. Evaluate it when the team already understands React and can maintain the native integrations required by the product. Workout logs, coaching journeys and booking screens still need device testing and accessible interaction design.
The official out-of-tree platforms documentation lists projects for additional targets such as Windows and web. It is inaccurate to say React Native has no Windows route; support and integration coverage must be assessed for the specific platform project.
Flutter
Flutter uses Dart and supports deployment across mobile, web and desktop platforms. Its supported-platforms documentation identifies the current target requirements. Verify that the packages needed for wearables, media and background work support the selected platforms.
A shared interface can help maintain consistency, but platform permissions, browser behavior and device-specific integrations still require engineering and testing. Validate text scaling, keyboard use and screen-reader behavior in the actual screens rather than assuming that a framework makes them accessible automatically.
Ionic with Capacitor
Ionic's documentation describes a web UI toolkit with Angular, React and Vue integrations. It can run in a browser and use Capacitor or Cordova for native deployment. It is not restricted to AngularJS and does not rely on NativeScript as its standard native bridge.
Assess Ionic when web skills and shared browser workflows fit the product. Prototype demanding media, background tracking and device integrations with the intended native plugins. It is a development toolkit, not a promise that a complete app can be created without code.
Native Android development with Kotlin
Kotlin is a programming language, not a fitness app framework. Android's Kotlin-first development guidance describes its role in Android tools and libraries. A native Android project can combine Kotlin with UI tools such as Jetpack Compose and the relevant platform APIs.
Consider native implementation when Android-specific behavior or an integration requires it. Plan iOS and web delivery separately; selecting a language for Android does not by itself deliver all platforms. Compare the ongoing skills and release work alongside initial development effort.
Why jQuery Mobile is not a current recommendation
The jQuery team deprecated jQuery Mobile in October 2021. Existing applications may need a migration plan, but a new fitness product should assess actively maintained alternatives. This retirement concerns jQuery Mobile, not every project that uses jQuery.
Run the same prototype checks for each candidate
- Record a workout offline, reconnect and resolve duplicate or conflicting entries.
- Request and revoke the permissions required by the chosen device integration.
- Play a representative exercise video over a slow connection.
- Check text scaling, keyboard navigation, focus order and screen-reader labels.
- Test the actual wearable or health-data interface rather than a mock success response.
- Estimate backend, administration, maintenance and release work as well as member screens.
Use the results to compare integration reliability, team familiarity, maintenance effort and the agreed launch scope. Keep a record of the versions and devices tested because support changes over time.
